Bluetooth Thermal Printer for Restaurant POS : Complete Buying Guide

A Bluetooth thermal printer is the most common hardware add-on for a mobile restaurant POS setup. No USB cables, no network configuration — pair it with your Android phone or tablet via Bluetooth and print receipts in seconds. Here's everything you need to know before buying.

58mm vs 80mm: which size to choose

Restaurant thermal printers come in two main roll widths: 58mm and 80mm. The 80mm prints more characters per line and produces cleaner, more readable receipts with larger fonts. The 58mm is more compact and cheaper but receipts are narrower.

For a restaurant printing detailed receipts with itemised orders, prices and business info, the 80mm is the better choice. For a snack bar printing simple two-line receipts, 58mm is sufficient. ServePoint supports both.

What to verify before buying

ESC/POS protocol. This is the universal protocol for Android POS printing. Any printer that uses ESC/POS will work with Android POS apps. Always confirm before buying — some cheap printers use proprietary protocols that require specific apps.

Android compatibility. Check reviews specifically from Android users. Brands like Xprinter, HOIN and Rongta have good Android compatibility track records. Avoid printers marketed primarily as "Windows POS" printers without Android confirmation.

Print speed. Budget printers print at 70–90mm/s. Mid-range printers reach 150–200mm/s. For high-volume service (50+ receipts/hour), pay for the faster print speed — the delay on slow printers adds up.

Battery life (for portable use). If a waiter carries the printer, a 2,000–3,000mAh battery lasts a full service. For a fixed counter printer, battery life is irrelevant — plug it in.

Bluetooth range. Most printers work reliably up to 10 metres line-of-sight. In a busy restaurant with walls between kitchen and floor, test the range before committing to a layout.
